The Answers to All Your Questions

What is BookStorm?

BookStorm is a Nigerian-based initiative that trains and supports established and emerging writers and illustrators to create high-quality children’s books that reflect Nigerian experiences and identities.

What kind of books does BookStorm produce?

We produce picture books for children in two categories: early reader picture books for children aged 4–7 and also books for children aged 8–11 that feature Nigeria characters, settings, and stories children can relate to.

Who funds the BookStorm initiative?

We are supported by a network of local and international partners including the EU, Sterling Bank, Book Buzz Foundation and IBBY Africa.

Who is eligible to apply for BookStorm training programmes?

We generally work with Nigerians aged 21–30 but we are happy to look at stories, story ideas and illustrations from anyone who has an interest in children’s literature—either as writers or illustrators.

How does BookStorm ensure quality?

We uphold the highest editorial and visual standards with professional editors and illustrators guiding each project.

Do I retain the rights to my work?

Writers and illustrators retain their copyrights and are always credited for their work. Should we decide to work with you, our contracts are fair and adhere to international standards. We want creators to be able to make living off their art.

Do you publish books in Nigerian languages?

Although we have started with publishing in English, we actively support publishing in Nigerian languages to promote multilingual literacy.

What are the SDGs and how do they relate to BookStorm?

It really depends on the project we are working on. Where relevant, we align our books with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to help children explore topics like equality, environment, and education through stories.

How long is the training programme?

Our training cycles typically run for 10 weeks and can include virtual workshops, assignments, and one-on-one mentorship.

Can I volunteer or intern with BookStorm?

Yes! We welcome volunteers and interns who are passionate about children's books and storytelling. Send an email to info@bookstorm.com

Can schools or organisations partner with BookStorm?

Absolutely. We welcome partnerships with schools, publishers, libraries, and NGOs. Get in touch via our contact form.

Are BookStorm books available for purchase?

Our books are sold in good bookstores nationwide and available to buy online. You can purchase them here.

How are participants selected?

We select based on creativity, originality, and alignment with our mission to publish beautiful, meaningful children’s books.

Can I submit a manuscript or illustration portfolio?

Subscribe to our newsletter so you know when we are expecting manuscripts. You can also send us an email.

What happens after I complete the training?

Ideally, you join our community of illustrators and writers. When there are projects or paid work, we will share the information. We hope to continue supporting Bookstormers with publication opportunities, and visibility through local and international showcases.

Is there a fee to participate in BookStorm?

No. Our programmes are funded and free for all selected participants.

Does BookStorm support digital publishing?

Yes. We publish in print but we are exploring digital formats to increase access and reach.

Can I apply if I’ve never been published before?

Yes! BookStorm is designed to support both established and emerging talent. No prior publishing experience is required.

Can I donate to BookStorm?

Yes. Donations help us train more creatives and distribute more books. Please get in touch via the contact form.
