BOOK BUZZ FOUNDATION
The Book Buzz Foundation (BBF) is an NGO that was founded in 2012 by Lola Shoneyin, an award-winning writer, poet and cultural activist.
Aims
- To promote literacy through the development of reading spaces for children
- To introduce reading initiatives that support the development of appropriate reading material for children
- To organise cultural and literary festivals in Nigeria and globally
BBF provides support for schools seeking to create reading spaces and libraries. We advise on equipment, furniture and reading initiatives. One of our main initiatives is the design and supply of sturdy mobile libraries that can be wheeled from classroom to classroom for Literacy Hour. These have proved very effective in schools that do not have the resources to equip a library space. We work with a range of local and international publishers to access age-appropriate, culturally relevant books.
More recently, the BBF has introduced BookStorm which aims to train and support writers, illustrators, editors graphic designers and agents in the production and distribution of children’s books. Our goal is to publish one hundred children’s books by the end of 2027.
BBF organises annual events such as Ake Arts & Book Festival which is in its twelfth year and Kaduna Books and Arts Festival (KabaFest) which is in its fifth. The events produce a programme of cultural, artistic and literary events which include book readings, master classes, schools visits, film screenings, musical presentations, fashion shows, workshops, performances and panel discussions, delivered by both Nigerian and international authors, thinkers, poets, filmmakers, actors, artists and academics. The Book Buzz Foundation also curates and co-curate festivals and events with festivals.
